What Refrigerant Is Used in Commercial Dehumidifiers

Industrial and environmental organizations in the United States are pushing for a ban on the use of R410A in new household and commercial air conditioning equipment starting from January 1, 2025.

In the air conditioning industry, starting from 2025, all household and commercial air conditioners may ban new devices with a GWP exceeding 750, and the validity period of VRF will be extended until January 1, 2026. This proposal will effectively ban R410A, as its GWP is 2088, leaving combustible A2L refrigerants R32 (GWP 677) and R454B (GWP 466) as the main commercial options currently available.

R410a Refrigerant

R410a is a new environmentally friendly refrigerant, composed of a mixture of R32 (difluoromethane) and R125 (pentafluoroethane) in a 50% mass fraction of each. According to the classification of refrigerant safety levels, R32 has a safety level of A2L, and R125 has a safety level of A1. R410a has a safety level of A1, which belongs to non-combustible, non-explosive, and low-toxicity mixed working fluids.

R410a, as a widely used medium to high temperature refrigerant today, is mainly used in household air conditioning, small and medium-sized commercial air conditioning (small and medium-sized unit air conditioning, household central air conditioning, multi split), mobile air conditioning, dehumidifiers, freeze dryers, marine refrigeration equipment, industrial refrigeration, and other refrigeration equipment. Compared with R22, R410a belongs to high-pressure refrigerants and requires higher pressure resistance strength for equipment and systems. However, R410A significantly increases the cooling capacity, providing the possibility for designing smaller and more compact air conditioning equipment, which is beneficial for reducing compressor displacement, reducing heat exchange copper tube diameter, and saving raw materials.

R410a has an ODP of 0 and does not deplete the ozone layer. But its GWP is very high, 1725 times that of carbon dioxide, similar to R22, so R410A is not the ultimate environmentally friendly refrigerant solution.

R32 Refrigerant

R32 is a single-component HFC refrigerant with a lower GWP value, approximately half that of R410A. It is comparable to R410A in terms of refrigeration efficiency, but has a relatively small impact on the environment. R32 is flammable under certain conditions, so additional fire prevention measures must be taken when designing and installing systems that use R32 to ensure safe operation.

R32 is flammable and has a safety level of A2L. R32 has a possibility of explosion, with an explosion limit of 14.4% to 29.3%. The refrigeration performance of R32 is similar to that of R410a. Under the same refrigeration capacity conditions, the filling amount of R32 is less than that of R410a (about 30% reduction), but the exhaust temperature is higher than that of R410a. R32 has an ODP of 0 and a GWP of 675, making it a green and environmentally friendly refrigerant. It is an important alternative to R22 and has been widely used in household air conditioners in countries such as Europe and America.

Refrigerant Used in Preair Dehumidifiers

According to the requirements of EU and US environmental laws, all dehumidifiers produced by our company for export to Europe and America use R32 refrigerant. Our commercial dehumidifiers are mainly used for flood repair, factory warehouse dehumidification, green plant planting, and basement and crawl space. We can provide dehumidification equipment and solutions for both passive (encountering floods or water leaks) and active (daily control of indoor humidity) dehumidification needs.

Preair is an independent manufacturer with our own research and development team and factory. OEM and ODM are both within our business scope. Welcome to your inquiry.
