A flooded basement is stressful, but acting quickly can prevent serious damage and mold growth. Here’s what you should do step-by-step:
1. Put Safety First
Turn off the power to the basement before entering. Water + electricity is dangerous.
Wear boots, gloves, and a mask, especially if the water looks dirty.
If water is deep or you smell gas, call professionals immediately.
2. Find and Stop the Source of the Water
Typical causes include:
Heavy rain or storm runoff
Burst pipes
Water heater or appliance failure
Sewer backup
Foundation leaks
If possible, shut off your main water valve or stop the source temporarily.
3. Start Removing the Water
Depending on the water level:
Shallow water: Use a wet/dry vacuum, mops, or squeegees.
Several inches deep: Use a sump pump or call a water-damage restoration company.
Sewage backup: Do not handle it yourself—call professionals.
4. Move Out Wet Items
Take out:
Carpets and rugs
Boxes and furniture
Clothing, bedding, books
Wet materials can grow mold within 24–48 hours, so move them fast.
5. Dry the Basement Completely
This step is crucial.
Use:
A high capacity LGR dehumidifier to remove moisture fast
Fans to improve air circulation
Heaters if the basement is cold
Keep the dehumidifier running until the humidity stays below 50%.
6. Clean and Disinfect
Floodwater often contains bacteria.
Clean the surfaces with:
Bleach solution (if appropriate), or
Professional disinfectant
Pay special attention to walls, floors, and any exposed structural materials.
7. Check for Mold
Inspect for:
Musty smell
Black or green spots
Peeling paint
If mold covers more than 10 square feet, call a professional remediation company.
8. Prevent Future Basement Flooding
Consider:
Fixing gutters and downspouts
Sealing foundation cracks
Installing or upgrading your sump pump
Adding an under house dehumidifier or drainage system
Using a water leak alarm
